Combating COVID in Somaliland

In order to support some of the world’s most vulnerable communities amidst the COVID-19 crisis, Genel in partnership with the African Network for Prevention and Protection Against Child Abuse and Neglect-Somali chapter (ANPPCAN-SOM) has funded the procurement of a medical oxygen production plant and 30 supplemental oxygen concentration machines and 30 patient monitors.

This equipment will continue to help local patients of the Burao Regional hospital beyond COVID-19. This initiative is the latest chapter in Genel’s collaborative relationship with ANPPCAN as back in 2014 Genel helped distribute over 3,750 Wonderbags to local women. “Wonderbags” are insulating covers for cooking pots that can keep food cooking for an additional 10 hours. The use of these bags means local women reduce their exposure to air pollutants associated with open flame cooking, mitigating forestation by reducing the need for firewood, and helps promote local female entrepreneurship via employment.
